New Departmental Faculty --- Guilherme Rocha Guilherme Rocha (Assistant Professor of Statistics) comes to us from University of California-Berkeley, where he just finished his PhD in Statistics, under the direction of Bin Lu.
Professor Rocha, originally trained as a Mechanical Engineer in his native Sao Paolo, Brazil, also has a M.A. in Economics.
His research interests include:
Statistical methodology and algorithms for high-dimensional data sets
Statistical machine learning
Computational statistics

Ph.D. Minor approved by the Campus! The Ph.D. Minor in Statistical Science is awaiting final approval from the Board of Trustees, but students can begin receiving it in the Fall Semester, 2008. See the link under Graduate Programs for Minor requirements.

New Departmental Faculty --- Chunfeng Huang and Karen Kafadar We are pleased to announce two new faculty in the Department of Statistics: Chunfeng Huang and Karen Kafadar.
Chunfeng Huang (Assistant Professor of Statistics) comes to us from a Postdoctoral fellowship in Statistics at Ohio State with Noel Cressie and Tailen Hsing. Professor Huang received his PhD in Statistics in 2001 from Texas A&M University, and has been an Assistant Professor of Statistics at North Dakota State University.
His research interests include:
Spectrum estimation for spatial processes,
Smoothing splines
Spatial statistics
Survival analysis
Computational statistics
Karen Kafadar comes to Indiana after a distinguished career, most recently at the University of Colorado-Denver. She joins the department as a Rudy Professor, with an adjunct appointment in the Department of Physics. Karen was educated at Stanford and Princeton in the 1970's, and has won many awards and has had a variety of editorships over the past twenty-five years.
Her research interests are:
Exploratory data analysis
Robust methods
Applications in physical/chemical/biological sciences
Computational and graphical statistics
She will be spending the 2007-08 academic year visiting the Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, before joining our department.
